Plush QC Test Methods: Pull, Seam, Needle & Colourfastness

Beyond eyeballing workmanship, plush has a set of hands-on tests. Here is what they check and why.

In short

Plush quality checks combine visual inspection with physical tests. The key ones are attachment (pull/tension) tests on eyes, noses and accessories, seam-strength checks, a needle/metal-detection scan for foreign objects, colourfastness tests (to rubbing, washing and sometimes light) and a stuffing weight/density check. Which apply, and to what force or limit, depends on the target market and age grade (ASTM F963, EN71). These can be built into your QC and a third-party inspection — agree the scope and acceptance criteria before production.

The core physical tests

Attachment / pull test A defined pulling force on eyes, noses, limbs and accessories to confirm they will not detach — critical for under-3 toys.
Seam strength Checks seams will not open under stress and release stuffing or small parts.
Needle / metal detection Scans for a broken needle or metal fragment left inside the filling — a basic soft-toy safety step.
Colourfastness Rub (crocking), wash and sometimes light tests so colour does not transfer or fade.
Stuffing weight / density Confirms fill amount matches the approved sample, so feel and shape stay consistent.

Tests map to market and age

The exact tests, forces and limits come from the destination market’s toy-safety rules — ASTM F963 in the US, EN71 in the EU and UK — and from the age grade. A toy for under-3s faces stricter small-parts and attachment requirements than an adult collectible. This is why scope is defined per project with your testing lab, not assumed.

Lab testing vs on-site inspection

Some checks are formal laboratory tests for compliance (and produce a report); others are on-site checks an inspector runs against your golden sample during a factory inspection. Both matter: lab tests support your compliance documents, while on-site attachment, needle and workmanship checks catch issues in the actual batch before it ships.
