Plush Color Matching: Pantone, Lab Dips & Batch Color

How plush colour is actually matched — and why your screen is not the reference.

In short

Plush colour is matched against a physical standard, not a screen. The usual route is to specify Pantone references — for textiles the TCX (cotton) or TPG/TPX systems — then approve lab dips, small swatches of the actual dyed fabric, before bulk dyeing. Because pile fabric, lighting and monitors all shift colour, the approved lab dip (and the colour on the golden sample) becomes the reference, with an agreed batch tolerance for normal dye-lot variation.

Why screens mislead

A colour looks different on every monitor, under every light, and on fluffy pile versus flat paper. A hex code or a photo is a starting point, not a standard. Matching needs a physical reference both sides can hold.

Pile and material change the read

The same dye reads differently on short minky, long fur or a flat woven label, because pile length, nap direction and sheen change how light bounces. Approve colour on the actual fabric you will use, give each colour area its own reference, and check the key colours together on the golden sample so the whole product reads right.

Agree the viewing light (metamerism)

Two colours can match under one light and clearly differ under another — this is metamerism, and it is the cause of most “it looked right at the factory” disputes. The fix is to agree a standard viewing light up front, usually D65 (average daylight) in a light box, and judge the lab dip and bulk under the same light. Name the illuminant in your spec so both sides assess colour the same way.

Dye lots vary slightly, and an exact match across large runs is not realistic. Agree an acceptable colour tolerance against the approved lab dip up front, judged under the agreed light, so “matches” is defined before bulk and colour questions have an objective reference rather than an argument.

Can you match any Pantone colour on plush?

Most colours can be matched closely, but pile fabric, dye behaviour and material limits mean some shades are easier than others, and an exact match is not always possible. Approve a lab dip on your actual fabric and agree a tolerance rather than relying on the code alone.

What is a lab dip?

A lab dip is a small swatch of your actual fabric dyed to your target colour for approval before bulk dyeing. Approving the lab dip — not a screen colour — sets the colour standard production is measured against. For printed artwork, the equivalent is an approved strike-off.

What is metamerism, and what lighting should we judge colour under?

Metamerism is when two colours match under one light but differ under another. To avoid it, agree a standard viewing light — commonly D65 daylight in a light box — and judge the lab dip and bulk under that same light. Naming the illuminant in your spec keeps both sides assessing colour the same way.

Why does my bulk look slightly different from the sample?

Small dye-lot variation is normal across large runs, and pile, nap direction and lighting all affect how colour reads. This is why you agree a colour tolerance against the approved lab dip, fix the viewing light, and check colour on the golden sample, so acceptable variation is defined in advance.
